I grew up racing motocross on 2 wheels. I did ok. Just as I turned 16 and was beginning to show a little promise on 125's I ate shit at Allen Ranch and broke my femur. It was a 4th gear wreck where the bone broke on the first impact and then I continued to flip and flop down the track wrecking the leg even worse. The bone didn't come out but it damn sure tried and destroyed everything on the inside in the process. Not only did it wreck my leg, break some ribs, and knock me out cold, but I shit my drawers too. You ever wreck hard enough to shit yourself? If you have then you've accomplished something mi amigo. I'm throwing that one in my "accomplishments" column. While I was healing up from that we decided to buy some Yamaha Blasters to clown around on. We never intended to actually take them to a track of any kind. Well, one thing led to another and we ended up going to Gary Yocham's track to goof-off and made a regular thing out of it. It was my first introduction to the quad crowd and I really enjoyed it. The Yochams are good folk. We'd go out there, run into each other, and then they'd grill some burgers and bust open some watermelons. A year later I got the rod out of my leg, we bought bikes again, and got back to "business." (or so i thought) I was slower than smoke off shit. It took me a long time to go fast again and I never did really pick it back up to the old level. More importantly I never had as much fun as I did with the friends I made riding 4-wheelers. It seemed the 2 wheel crowd was just a little too...stuffy. I mean we're all the same level of redneck when you step back a bit. We're just a bunch of dorks in some field in the middle of nowhere throwing dirt and having fun. I don't think that the addition or subtraction of the number of wheels on what you're riding does as much for status as some think.
In current news... I'm not sure who is up for riding this weekend. It looks like the weather is gonna be nice. I'm taking my bike to Sandtrax today to fix the things that I broke in the last cross-country/creek crossing/shoulda-brought-a-cattle-chaser-quad event. My Saturday is busy but Sunday might be open. If nobody wants to ride then I might head down to the TQRA event to watch the locals.
Call me if you wanna ride,
