Po Boy race series

Man the economy has got EVERYbody down. Even us here at Chicken Creek Motorsports Park are feeling the crunch. That’s why we’re starting a new race series that’s more affordable for the workin’ man. (and woman if any of you are so inclined…or reclined)

Here’s the basics: A few years ago several of us bought XR100’s, the greatest motorcycle in the world. We had a blast for a while as a group having mini races and had one really bitchin’ track for them. It was in the shade of some big trees, had big sandy berms, elevation changes, and it was short. The good thing about it being short is there’s always a race going on. If someone was to pull out a lead they were immediately in lapped traffic.

But as always, life happened and most of the guys got rid of their 100’s for one lame reason or another. Grant and I are currently the only ones with a 100 but several folks are interested again and for good reason. …and that is the new series at Chicken Creek.

As soon as my knee is better I plan to begin construction on several different tracks. Each track will have a different flavor. One will be built in the sandy creek bottoms, one will have a supercross vibe (but nothing that will tear the bikes up), we’ll have a flattrack oval, a cross-country, TT, etc… Another feature of the tracks is that they will all be short enough to keep the racing tight as mentioned above.

Some “rules” to keep the spirit of the races right:
• No blue flag mentality. You are encouraged to defend your position even if you are being lapped. This keeps things interesting.
• No fancy schmancy riding gear. Safety gear is of course allowed (helmets, gloves, boots, etc…) However, there are to be no leathers or jerseys at “official” races. Anyone showing up thinking they're factory will be forced to start backwards, second row….something.
• Bone-stock XR100’s are the preferred ride but fancy pit bikes are allowed in the interest of having enough folks to participate.
• As always, these “races” are by invite only. If you have to ask, don’t bother.

Another type of event/track that will be part of the series are “Fair Races.” These are in the spirit of the old days when the traveling circus/county fair was in town and they’d throw together some sort of motorcycle race. These races will take place at someone’s house in conjunction with a BBQ. The track type won’t be bogged down by being designated. It’ll simply be whatever is convenient at each location. Throw down some corner markers, maybe it goes over a porch, under a clothesline…you get the picture.

So grab any cheap old 100 you can (or a fancy pitbike if you’re compensating for something) and get ready for a fun and cheap ’09-’10 race season!
